Speech Recognition demonstration gone awry
Not sure when this video was recorded, but it's so funny. Says it was posted July 29, 2006, so it's pretty old. The funny part is, I don't think it works that much better now.

Sometimes I do have to smile
Okay, so I have bad reports and then I have ones that make me laugh. It's not actually the report that made me smile but the fact that the doctor just said Butt Paste. Yeah, I know it's an actual medication for diaper rash, but any time a doctor prescribes Butt Paste to a patient it still makes me laugh, just can't help it, I'm a goob that way.
101 Jobs to make you appreciate yours
Found this website with a list of 101 jobs to make you happy you have yours. It's just a silly list but it made me chuckle this morning. You can visit it here.

How are your balls today?
Not medical but still funny. Okay, it is for men's self-exam for the Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation, so I guess technically it is medical, just not medically helpful for MTs, but we all need a laugh once in a while so enjoy.
Too bad they don't make a funny self-breast exam one, I'd add it right here alongside this one.
Hmm, after a quick YouTube search I found this video for breast self-exam. Funny, not as funny as the ball one above, but still pretty funny.

Another post from the "what's in it for you" lady
I think she's a lady, I hope she's a lady or else she might not be happy that I called her a lady.
Anyway, her latest post is about speech recognition gibberish, funny stuff and totally relatable (is that a word and does it have an e after the a?). Love it (and that's spelled lub et). You can view the blog post here.

Funny, funny speech recognition
Speech recognition (ASR) sometimes completely amazes me.
I work mainly on speech recognition, which I'm not overly fond of, but this morning it's been pretty great. Anyway, I'm sitting here doing a report and my ASR is having trouble picking up simple words such as back pain and keeps wanting to type odd things such as back pen and buck pin, but then I'll be going along and it will spell something hard right which always amazes me. How can it spell back pain wrong but pick up and spell the hard words correctly. Does the doctor pronounce the hard words more clearly?
The real kicker for me is when it will get the simple stuff wrong but spell the patient's name correctly, something like Warren Schraeder it will totally spell correctly. I always have to double check and smile when it gets the patient's odd name correctly or some doctor I've never heard of it spells right. Uhmm...shouldn't it get pain right and Warren Schraeder wrong? No this isn't really the patient's real name, patient confidentiality and all that you know.
Anyway, just something to stop and go hmmmm about.
A note about the picture above... I Googled speech recognition and then hit images and that picture was there. I have no clue why it was under speech recognition, but it made me smile so I added it.
Okay, a second note here. I got curious and went to look at where the picture came from and it's actually from a blog called Speech Recognition, news from a technology that is transforming healthcare practice. Very interesting that the latest post is about the sale of MedQuist to CBay, how funny, such a small blogging world. You can visit the blog here. Glad I went back and checked it out.

MT 101 - how to quiet the kids
Sheesh, wish I had thought of this, especially for my husband, he's actually far worse than my kids.

Is this how it is in the mind of a person with ADHD?
I sometimes wonder if I have an adult form of ADD because I have such a hard time concentrating, which can really be a problem when your job entails long amounts of time sitting in front of a computer screen typing up boring reports.
I do have to say tho that I'm changing my self-diagnosis if this is how ADD or ADHD feels to the sufferer, haha.

MT 101 - the day off
From the ongoing saga of Chris the at-home MT. She has the day off and I know exactly how she feels being scared of the sun since I'm often feel trapped in the house too. It's the reason I love the snow, it makes me feel happy about being cooped up in the house. Sunny days are killers because I so want to be out in the sunshine.
Anyway, enjoy the video. If you like Chris' videos you can visit her YouTube page here

How did you spend your rebate check?
Well I haven't gotten my stimulus check yet but I'm sure when I do it will go for good things like gas, which is now $4.05 here, and bills. But it's fun to see how others spent their check. Now there's a website that lets you do just that. Check out http://www.howispentmystimulus.com/ it's a hoot.
A funny example:
"I'm using mine to pay off about half of my veterinary bill. My dog had an expensive winter with recurring medical issues, including back trouble. Luckily, acupuncture has really helped! Thanks Bush, for spending the country's money on my dog!"

Check out some lesser used acronyms and medical slang
Check out these websites for some funny lesser known acronyms
1) DOCTORS' SLANG, MEDICAL SLANG AND MEDICAL ACRONYMSAND VETERINARY ACRONYMS & VET SLANG : These are funny slang words doctors may or may not use. For example:
ADR - Ain’t Doing Right
AFU & BR - all f***ed up & beyond repair
AGA - Acute Gravity Attack (fell over)
Have a laugh and read these here.
2) Or how about 8 medical terms your doctor uses to insult you such as:
PRATFO:
What It Means: Patient Reassured And Told to Fuck Off.
When It's Used: When a patient comes into the ER more hysterical than ill, the doctor reassures the patient and asks them to leave. However, this acronym has gotten at least one doctor into trouble when he scribbled it in a patient's chart and then later was asked to explain it in court.
We're not saying you should ever lie in court, but in that situation you should at least consider it.

MT 101, video 5
A new MT 101 video. Usually the days aren't quite this slow, but since it's the day after a holiday, sometimes that's the way it goes, at least that's how mine go.

MT 101
Came across these vids on YouTube (no, it's not me). Anyway, they're kind of interesting to see and hear from another MT (what can I say, I'm nosy). There are four of them so far, I will keep checking back for more.

MT keyboard after 8-1/2 years
I posted earlier that I go through about a keyboard a year. Usually it's because I've spilt too much stuff in it and the keys wont work anymore or I've spilt coffee in it or something. I like to think though that if I was to have the same keyboard for over eight years that it would look something like this.
The guys over at Boing Boing posted this picture of an MT's keyboard. The weird thing is, it still works fine. How funny.

You might be an MT if
Someone yells duck and you start typing d-U-c-t in midair.
You start correcting people's grammar mistakes in a chat room dedicated to discussing movies and TV shows.
You know your gluteus maximus from your olecranon process.
Your favorite 3 words are "end of dictation."
You refer to making your holiday turkey as prepping and draping in the usual fashion.
You guess the outcome of CSI in the first 5 minutes of the show after hearing the (not-so-mysterious) mysterious cause of death.
You can't go into a doctor's office without asking the receptionist "Who does your medical transcription?" or commenting to your own doctor that you think he's a bad dictator and you feel sorry for the MT working for him.
Your doctor tells you that you have a problem with your back but doesn't want to confuse you with the details and you ask him -- "Were sagittal and coronal T1-weighted images performed and T2- and proton density-weighted images also obtained?"
You think percussion is something that belongs more in a medical report than in a rock band.
You say to your honey, "skip the flowers and chocolate for my birthday and get me the latest version of Stedman's Medical and Pharma spellchecker."
You offer your landscaper 7 cents per line of grass for mowing your lawn.
You press the left pedal in your car and you're surprised when the car doesn't go into reverse.
Your neighbor comes to you to make a diagnosis based on a series of symptoms and advise them on whether to have surgery or not. (you refuse of course LOL)
Your favorite quote is "Acronyms bad, verbose originators good."
You can fix stuck keys on your computer keyboard by turning it upside down and banging out the crumbs.
You have a Mr. Coffee within arm's reach of your desk.
The first place your husband and children look for you is at your desk rather than in the kitchen.
Your husband and children wave their hand between your face and the computer screen to get your attention.
You can fold laundry while sitting at your desk and listening to the latest dictator who speaks 5 words in 60 seconds... and still changes his mind 4 times on exactly how to put it.
You step on people's feet to get them to repeat what they just said.
You have a bladder capacity of more than a quart.
You have a bookshelf by your desk in which no two books are the same color.
Your dream is to someday have every book Stedman's makes.
Your wrist rest has food spots on it.
No one who doesn't know how to touch type can use your computer keyboard because at least half the keys have the letters worn off.
Your friends have to learn your macro names in order to read your emails to them.
Your husband and children have to learn your macro names in order to read the notes you write them.
You are the only one in your family who can understand the clerks at the 7-11.
You find watching only one TV screen at a time boring.
You correct the pharmacist's spelling.
It aggravates you that the keys on the telephone keypad are in a different order than the keys on the 10-key pad on your computer keyboard.
You have a mini refrigerator sitting next to your computer tower.
More than half the icons on your desktop have to do with drugs or dictionaries.
There are more coffee cups in your office than there are in the kitchen.
You have your Mr. Coffee plugged in to your UPS (battery backup).
Your friends want you to go to their doctor appointments with them so you can act as an interpreter.
You go to the doctor with your spouse who tells the doctor, "She's a medical transcriptionist so I'll let her tell you what's wrong with me." To this, the doctor replies, "OK...would you prefer to tell me or do you want to type it?"
You flip back and forth between work and newsgroups.
You watch television commercials for prescription drugs very closely to see what the generic form is and how both are spelled.
You get an invitation to something that specifies "work attire" and you wonder if that means fluffy slippers, flip flops - or if it would be okay to show up barefoot.
You go to start the car to go to the grocery store and find the battery is dead. You don't know how long it's been dead.
ANYTHING SOUND FAMILIAR???!
